How to Rewire Your Subconscious Mind using Affirmations, Meditations, and Mindful Exercises.

“I am happy”.
Saying this affirmation may not seem like it’s working immediately, however your subconscious mind is taking it in every time you say it. Your subconscious mind plays a huge role in your actions. Just like how you know how to brush your teeth, put on clothes, get ready for work, that’s your subconscious mind doing all that. When it comes to attracting the things that you want or being in the state of mind that you desire, it’s important to understand how your subconscious mind works and how to utilize the tools and resources to work that subconscious mind out. I never started saying affirmations until the beginning of this year and I, like many others, didn’t really believe affirmations worked until one day I decided to let go of all expectations and truly believe in the words I was saying to myself.
Our subconscious mind has been programmed ever since we were children by either our environment, families, or the programs society has installed in our minds like teaching us in school that it was important to go to college, get a degree, get married, have kids, and be done with life. Even the news and social media affects our subconscious mind. Every time we witness something negative, dramatic, or scary online, we experience that in our subconscious mind and that creates fear. We were programmed to think certain ways to get what we want without thinking about the “intention” behind it. If you have experienced any past traumas, life-changing events, or heartbreaks that have not been healed, your subconscious mind goes into what I call “fight or flight” mode and tends to bring you in a loop of constant “survival” mode where you are searching for “happiness”, “love”, and “abundance”. This program of the mind tends to lead towards depression, anxiety, frustration, addictions, and emotional mood swings. If you’re wondering why your life hasn’t gone the way that you wanted it too, it’s because your subconscious mind has been programmed to think those thoughts of doubt and fears based on your life experiences and information that surrounded you growing up and even now in your present moment.
But what if you could change and reprogrammed your whole subconscious mind to one of positivity, love, and happiness?
I started my journey of healing by joining a breath work meditation program for 8 weeks and it was life changing. Through meditation alone, I learned that a lot of programs that I had stored in the back of my subconscious mind was negative and based off of fears like “I am not good enough”, “I am not worthy of speaking my truth”, and “I am scared to be open and vulnerable”. Although I didn’t admit to these thoughts, they were there subconsciously and it had made me realized for 22 years of my life, I had a “victim” mentality and that I was responsible for the way I chose to deal with my emotions and limiting beliefs. Luckily, all that had changed through consistent meditation work and writing and saying affirmations. I am more positive, energetic, and so much more hopeful about life since practicing meditation and affirmations on a daily basis.
I am so grateful to have learn these simple and mindful exercises and I can now share this knowledge to the world in hopes that this too, will help you rewire your mind to one of positivity and love.
Here are ways to utilize meditations and affirmations to rewire your subconscious mind.
1. Spend the first 10mins of your morning meditating.
You want to start your day with a clear mind, and by quieting your mind, you are allowing your thoughts to flow through. You get a clearer sense of how your mind works by focusing on your breathing and being more aware. I suggest avoiding laptops, screens, or phones and sit in silence so you can truly appreciate the time that you have to yourself.
2. Be aware of your thoughts and acknowledge them by letting them go.
Through meditation, you become aware of your thoughts and when you notice a negative thought that pops up, let it go by breathing it out. It’s better to be aware and acknowledge how your mind processes and the thoughts that come through than to avoid it and push it away.“You are not your thoughts”. Separate yourself from your thoughts and allow your breathing to let it all flow out of you.
3. Finish meditation with a physical action or touch.
It’s so important to give yourself love through these moments. Give yourself a hug and touch body parts that you haven’t cared for in a long time like your ankles, your hands, your wrists, your feet, anything that you want to put your love and energy into. You can dance off any unwanted energy or move around to get your body flowing. By doing this, you are allowing yourself to open up and giving yourself the attention you deserve.
4. Write down as many affirmations as you can in “present” tense and with “gratitude”.
After doing your meditation, write down as many affirmations that you want to reprogram your mind and make sure they are in “present” tense and that you show gratitude to your higher self. (Ex. I am grateful for all the love, abundance, and happiness that I am experiencing within myself.) If unsure what affirmations to write, I use this app called Mantra and it really helps form affirmations that are beneficial in all categories including health, career, love, self, etc.
5. Set your intention and invoke emotions and feelings in your affirmations.
Now after writing your list of affirmations, set your intention for each affirmation by asking yourself “How do I want to feel?” and “Why am I doing this?”. Once you understand your intention and how you want the outcome to be, then really feel that intention with your emotions and your heart and let the feelings come out naturally. Your emotional state plays a huge part in how the affirmations will work. You want to invoke emotions of happiness, joy, abundance, and positivity. Any state that will really get you into that mood of feeling the affirmation. (that’s why meditation beforehand is important)
6. Look in the mirror and say the affirmations out loud 3 times.
Once you set your intentions and your emotional state is one of either excitement, confidence, happiness, hopeful, or any positivity, look at yourself in the mirror and repeat your affirmations 3x times and put the emotions behind the affirmation, and each time notice how your emotions intensify. Repeat this with every affirmation you wrote down.
7. Let go of all expectations
This is one of the most important steps is letting go. A lot of people don’t believe the affirmations work because they are “expecting” something out of it each time. When you are focused on the outcome too much, then your mind is rewiring to focus on that outcome instead of the “present” state. We want to be able to be present and allow the state of mind to flow freely. After saying your affirmations, let it all go by breathing it all out and go on with your day.
8. Be mindful of your surroundings and what you’re feeding your mind.
Be aware of the news feed, social media, and other outlets that your mind is in-taking. Unfollow people who are negative or complainers online and follow those who show positive and uplifting posts that is informative and healthy for your mind to take in. De-cluttering your space will help clear your thoughts. Practice being mindful by setting your “intention” for every action.
9. Be consistent and have patience.
If your mind has been wired to think a certain way your whole life, it may take some time to rewire everything. This doesn’t happen overnight but remember each day that you do practice this, you are one step closer and progressing in life. This work requires a lot of consistency and having a morning routine really helps with the process. It’s important to practice meditation and saying these positive affirmations daily in order to speed up the process of rewiring. This requires being patient and disciplined with yourself.
Practicing meditation, saying affirmations, and being mindful consistently will improve your life and your mindset 100%. I promise you that this work is worth doing every single day. My life has changed completely since I started doing these practices and they are simpler than you think. Once you get into your routine and flow, everything comes naturally and your mind and body will thank you so much for doing the work. If you are at the end of this article, I would like to thank you for taking the time to read through this and give you my blessings for your self-loving journey. Here’s an affirmation for you to use. “I am worthy of a successful life and I am so grateful for all the love and happiness the world has given to me already.”
